"Don't be weighed down with things that concern this world: What should we wear?
What should we eat? What should we drink? … Look at the birds. They don't worry
…" Matthew 6:25,26 Clear Word Paraphrase
Philio is my son-in-law's Blue-headed Pionus. They are great pals and Philio
seems to really love his "Papa". He was among the feathered friends left in my
care while the family was on holiday. Philio is a clown. He is also an outgoing
extrovert. At wake up time, while everyone else was happily eating their veggies
and grains, Philio was busy tuning up for choir practice. "Squawk, Squawk,
Squawk" Then just in case I had missed it the first time he repeated "Squawk,
Squawk, Squawk". I was afraid a delegation from my neighbors would be knocking
on my door!
Philio had been put into a much smaller cage to accommodate my tiny house, and
his beloved "Papa" had gone and left him with this strange person. He had a lot
to complain about, but did he sit in a corner and pine? No way. It didn't matter
what he had for breakfast or if his water was changed at the same time each day.
He didn't worry that "Papa" might not ever come back for him, he just went along
doing Pionus things and being a joy to all around.
He had a few tricks to keep me amused - like hanging UPSIDE DOWN with his head
folded back up between his feet. Another thing he liked to do was this: When all
was quiet, he'd drop from his perch to the floor of his cage. PLOP! It never
failed to get my attention. I would look over at him to see if he was OK and
there he was 'grinning' at me. When he got his treats or his supper pellets he
really had fun. One day his pellets contained a piece of dried banana, and he
immediately picked that up, gave me an impish look and DROPPED IT ON THE FLOOR!
Yes, truly, Philio was making the very best of his situation.
We sometimes allow our "Papa" God to get away from us - our fault, not His -
then we get all sad, depressed and gloomy. Jesus said we shouldn't be weighed
down with worldly matters, but be like the birds, don't worry; God is in his
heaven and all is well with the world.
