Those who sow in tears will
reap with songs of joy. Psalm 126:5
This service that you perform is not only supplying
the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks
to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will
praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of
Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 2
Corinthians 9:12-13
The smaller sized bananas growing on our next door
neighbor’s tree were like spun sugar. You couldn’t buy such luscious bananas
anywhere. Each bunch had dozens of bananas, and Carol generously shared them
with the neighbors. My husband is crazy about them and was appreciative of the
gift.
Their original tree was planted close to the fence on
the lot line. As soon as a banana tree bears fruit, the tree dies. However by
that time, another shoot is up, and before long the next tree is ready to
produce bananas.
Fortunately for us, the last time that tree sent up a
new plant, it came up on our side of the fence. For months now, we’ve watched it
grow. I’ve taken some neat photographs of it and we’ve watched that bunch of
bananas go from tiny green nubs to golden yellow delicious treats.
We didn’t plant the tree, but we have definitely
reaped the benefits from it. There is this universal truth, you reap what you
sow. And others reap what you’ve sown, also.
As I thought of this, it occurred to me that it would
be good to consider the bigger picture that comes from my own “sowing”. After
all, everything won’t stay on our side of the fence forever.
