Psalm 22:6 - But I am a worm, and not a man, a
reproach of men, and despised by the people. (NASB)
We have had a few worm days in our life recently.
Hubby has been taking chemotherapy. Fear raised its head in our house for a
while, and made us feel quite worm-like. I thought that meant small,
insignificant, cowering, and afraid, but after reading this verse, I began to
look at worms with more interest.
It isn't very difficult to find signs of their
presence: worm holes. Worm holes are miniscule little openings completely
surrounded by a circular dirt pattern. Every day there are more. Where yesterday
there were no markings, no sign, no evidence of even the beginnings of such a
thing, today there it is -- another worm hole. The hardest ground or the tiniest
pavement crack -- all are susceptible to the worm!
Hubby and I began to understand that just because our
situation was not one that we would have chosen, God had allowed it and would
gave us the strength to endure it and even shine in it. Little by little, we dug
through hard ground and seemingly impervious asphalt with praise. We had so much
to be thankful for. We were especially grateful that we were able to speak about
God to many who wouldn't otherwise be inclined to listen. Our goal switched from
sheer survival to one of leaving a little bit of Jesus everywhere we went.
That's what worms do. Though seldom visible, they leave a clear trail of their
passing.
Care to join us in the worm life? It's not nearly as
bad as it sounds. In fact, we highly recommend it!
Prayer: Lord, like the psalmist in Psalm 22, we will
tell of Your name to all we meet, for You have not despised or abhorred our
afflictions. You have not hidden Your face from us. When we cried out to You,
You heard us. We pray, Lord, that to the ends of the earth, people will remember
and turn to You. For Christ's sake, we pray. Amen.
