Dion (Part 3)

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 - For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. (RSV)

Dion is dead! He was so tiny, so young, so fragile. How did it happen so quickly? Why did it happen? I was saddened.

Dion, my Venus Fly Trap, lived in my home for only a few short weeks. When I bought Dion, I was thrilled. I had fun learning about him and watching him eat and watching him grow.

Then, we were gone for four days. When we returned, Dion was dead! I like to think that he died of loneliness because I wasn't around, fussing over him. I don't really know why he died. All I know is that he is dead!

All living things are given a certain number of days to live here on this earth. We see loved ones, young and old, pass on, and we grieve. We see our pets pass away, and we grieve. We see plants grow and bloom and fade away in the fall.

God's Word is true: for everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. How it hurts when someone we loved dearly has passed on. It hurts even worse when young people are taken from us, when a child is taken, or when a parent is taken and leaves young children. We see that they spent only a few short years here on earth. We are saddened for the loss with which the remaining family has to deal. We wonder why it has to be this way, this path, this journey for that dear family!

Psalm 116:15 - How painful it is to the Lord when one of his people dies! (GNB)

We can take comfort in knowing that the Lord is also pained when someone dies.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we don't understand so many things. We rant and rave about the unfairness of life sometimes. Thank You that You are okay with it when we question You -- in fact, You want us to "reason" with You. "'Come now, and let us reason together,' saith the Lord." (Isaiah 1:18 KJV) Help us to come to the point of trusting You in all of our situations. Comfort us in our losses, O Lord, we pray. Amen.
