A Faith Lesson

Matthew 6:25a - Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. (NIV)

When my husband was a student back in 1976, we were as poor as church mice. We always had more month than we had money to cover expenses. But as a teacher, he considered that getting his master's degree was important for him to advance in his profession.

I tended to worry about feeding my family. So I put in a small vegetable garden in a sunny spot near the alleyway -- a few tomatoes, beans, lettuce, and cucumbers. No sooner had we begun harvesting when a water main break in the alley brought a repair crew that planted the foot of a backhoe squarely in my garden, churning it to a pulp!

At lunch time, the foreman was at my back door apologizing. He said he'd make it up to us. Having been raised in New York City, I was a bit sceptical, but said, "Not to worry. It's okay."

Later that week, the foreman pounded on my door again. His arms were loaded down with a bushel of tomatoes, some cukes, onions, peppers, and green beans! In addition, he brought us a bushel of peaches. My "special" son, George, saw them and shouted out, "Peaches! Yum!" You see, peaches are his very favourite thing to eat in this world, next to pizza.

Does God care for the little details of our lives? You "betcha", God does! Even to providing a bushel of peaches for a kid who loved them more than life itself and tomatoes for his sister who liked to eat them whole with a bit of salt sprinkled on them!

What was the point in all my worry?!

Prayer: Loving provider, thank You for caring for us so very much. Thank You for kind people who are Your hands and feet providing for Your children. Enable us to trust and love You more. Thank You in Jesus' name. Amen.
