The Hand-held Mirror

2 Corinthians 3:18 - And we all, with unveiled face, the glory of the Lord beholding in a mirror, to the same image are being transformed, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (Young's Literal Translation - YLT)

Today, I picked up my hand-held mirror to check the back of my hairdo to see if it would pass inspection. What I beheld in the glass was marred by splotches of dried toothpaste, water spots, and other minute detritus which I had failed to notice. Disgusted with myself for letting it get so untidy, I promptly pulled out the glass cleaner from under the sink, gave the mirror a squirt, and polished it with a rag. A second gander at my hairdo revealed some necessary adjustments, which were quickly made by a vigorous brushing.

We are like my hand-held mirror. We are supposed to reflect the Father's image within us. Our sins are like the spots on my mirror. How often we let our pet habits, sins, and failings obscure that image of Christ in us! While they may not totally obscure our witness, they do mar it. However, when we make the choice to change our ways -- that is, repent -- then the Holy Spirit, like my glass cleaner, polishes us to a high sheen. We are forgiven and transformed -- regenerated through the blood of Christ Jesus. Then we shine, reflecting the glory of the Lord!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, how often we come begging forgiveness for our pet sins and faults! We are utterly ashamed and would change our ways. O Holy Spirit, spray our souls with Your cleansing flood through Jesus' blood, so that we might be completely transformed and so that Your image might shine through us, for we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
