A Grandmother's Anxiety

horizontal rule

"Congratulations, a baby boy!" The words were taken in by a beaming and proud grandma. On February 14, 2010, Carter Nicholas was born, our fourth grandchild. What an exciting time! He is such a sweet, newborn baby boy, and I am sure that all grandmothers and grandfathers feel that their grandchild or grandchildren are the most beautiful girls or boys in the world!

It is so hard to believe that Carter is over eight weeks old already. I remember writing about Katen, Carter's older sister, who will soon be three years old. It seems that time is passing us at the speed of light! I wonder: What does the future hold for our grandchildren? What will the world be like in five years, in ten years? Will there be a famine or a war or a biological attack? Will our grandchildren have enough food to eat? Will they be able to buy a house or be able to afford to live somewhere? What will confront our grandchildren's children in the future?

I was becoming aware that I was being fearful. I was being fearful of the unknown. I was having anxious thoughts, like other new grandparents or parents. But here is Jesus' advice:

Matthew 6:25,32b-34 - For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (NASB)

May God grant us such trust in His power and provision that we will be enabled by His Spirit to put our Lord's admonitions into practice.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know what we need, even before we ask. You already know what the future holds for each and every one of us. Help us to trust You completely. Amen.
