The Wonder Of The Snow

Job 37:6a,7 - For He says to the snow, "Fall on the earth"; He seals the hand of every man, that all men may know His work. (NKJV)

For those who live in the northeastern United States as I do, weather is a daily topic of conversation. The winter season is most challenging. For most adults, snow is an unwelcome intruder, adding stress to our schedule-driven lives. That's how I felt prior to a major snowstorm that dumped up to four feet of snow in upstate New York and parts of New England.

The blustery storm grounded planes, halted trains, and closed schools and offices state-wide. Power companies worked around the clock, while homeowners and convenience store clerks plowed, shovelled, and swept, struggling to keep the white stuff from piling up on driveways, sidewalks, and rooftops. Then it was over.

The following morning, as the sun dazzled in the blue sky, it was business as usual. The roads had been salted and cleared, and the morning commuters and school buses were back on schedule. A couple of hours after breakfast, I grabbed my Bible and sat in a cozy leather chair next to my kitchen window. Looking through the window, I couldn't help but fix my eyes on the blanket of whiteness all around. Within moments, I unexpectedly found myself caught up in the wonder of the snow.

The sun's rays flooded the front yard with tiny, sparkling ice crystals. I watched as an arctic blast kicked up snow in its path, swirling it in mid-air like angel dust. The Spirit of God lifted my heart upward as I meditated on His word, forever altering my worldly concept of snow. Ah, those precious, sacred moments that we hold dear are like those sparkling ice crystals ... fleeting. For example, we taste of His goodness on Sunday morning and try to get through the week on the fragrance of that meal, yet so often, He longs to woo us into His presence from the whirlwind of activity storming our lives.

Yes, the white, powdery flakes of splendour descending from the sky are a gentle reminder from our heavenly Father, who, perfect in knowledge, keeps us from going our own way by frustrating our plans and stopping our hands from outside activity. He patiently waits for us to join Him in fellowship, to acknowledge our dependence on Him, and to ponder His great and glorious works.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for stilling the blustery winds of our souls, that we may behold You in all Your works. Amen.
