Being Involved, But Not Committed.

I recall once when at a church I was attending, the pastor asked if I would
help him set up a visitation program for his Sunday School. The church was among
the finest in the city, and in a prime location.
Located on a major U.S. highway, directly across the avenue from a state
college, where you could see the interstate from its parking lot. This church
could easily seat 2,000 in the sanctuary and facilitate that many in Sunday
School!
In my response, I stated, that as an outsider, I did not feel free to take on
such a responsibility, however, since I was a frequent visitor and supporter of
his church, with his permission, I would talk with the S.S. Superintendent, who
was the key person that should lead such an undertaking. This was fine with him.
So, when I felt the time was right, I got together with the superintendent and
asked him, had he ever given any consideration to setting up a visitation
program? Believe me, they needed one!
The church was barely running over 100 in S. S. They were so excited about the
new ones coming in the front doors each Sunday, they failed to see the souls
going out the back doors, never to come again, because there was no genuine
concern shown after the initial handshake at the front doors when they first
came to visit!
As long as I keep a sane mind, I shall never forget his response. He looked at
me and said, “Brother Raleigh, you know I have; however, since I have double
responsibilities here, in that I’m also choir director, I haven ‘t really taken
it too seriously, because I don ‘t want to spread myself too thin!”
This is a perfect picture of being involved, but not committed! This reminded me
so much of what King David said in Psalms 142: 4.
“I LOOKED ON MY RIGHT HAND, AND BEHELD, BUT THERE WAS NO MAN THAT WOULD KNOW ME.
REFUGE FAILED ME; NO MAN CARED FOR MY SOUL!”
