A little cedar tree waved goodbye to its home, the forest beyond.
Sadly remembering its serene place by an algae-covered
pond.
It's green feathery branches wouldn't be blown by the
delicate wind.
Never again feel the refreshing moisture of fresh dew,
nature's special blend.
The sun would no longer warm its tender branches with
its soothing glow.
Nature's orchestra had performed the little fir's last
show.
Loaded on a large truck, the fir was thrown beside
other trees.
Covered by a tarp it couldn't feel the tickle of the
southern-blowing breeze.
The truck stopped at a large department store with a
tag marked,
For Sale. Curious bystanders pulled on his branches;
nobody heard his lonesome wail.
He was shoved in a station wagon, and taken in a dark
house.
Placed in a container of scented oil, only companion,
a curious mouse.
His branches were weighed down by balls, tinsel, an
angel with a flashing light,
But the little fir tree felt no happiness; no nature
friends in sight.
Underneath brightly decorated presents were placed
with great care.
The alienated tree had no holiday spirit to share.
For he yearned to stand among other firs feeling
proud.
Not in a corner draped with a flickering burial
shroud.
On Christmas morning children danced about pulling on
the dejected tree.
By New Years Day all decorations were pulled down,
death had been set free.
By a garbage dumpster the grieving fir tree was
placed.
With only the last remnants of silvery tinsel
interlaced.
As the trash truck tossed him among the discarded
Christmas array.
The little fir tree's last words were: "On Christ's birthday I gave the great sacrifice, my life in his honor that day."
