There are times in our prayer lives when, for whatever
reason, we don't seem to hear God's voice. At those times we wonder: what am I
doing wrong? Is Louis really going to be all right? Will my wayward son
eventually come home?
I have discovered over the past half a century that too often we miss out on the
pleasure of the ride itself.
Let me explain: D46, the road to Camembert, France, was closed. Had I not asked
a passerby, I would have had to skip that particular attraction, along with the
opportunity to taste delicious Camembert cheese. Umm. Just thinking about it
makes my mouth water! You should try it sometime!
Anyway, back to the story at hand. I found out that because of a yard sale, the
village of Meulles had closed its main road.
Wait a minute. A yard sale? Really???
But there was nothing we could do, and following the directions of the friendly
local, we returned to our previous route and took a detour to bypass the
eventful D46. And you know what, I enjoyed every minute of it. The scenery was
so inspiring that I felt God's presence in our midst. I savor such moments,
but these would be non-existent if I just kept rushing around!
This is why it is so important to learn one important lesson: "I wait for you, O
LORD ; you will answer, O Lord my God." (Ps 38:15 NIV)
Detours in life help us get acquainted with our Maker. Unless we allow our focus
to go elsewhere, that is, and miss the golden opportunities He hands us.
When my wife recently had to undergo cancer surgery, I became what she termed,
"a mother hen". I spend every moment with her, doing the chores she used to do.
And you know what? This was the highlight of my summer. As we waited together
for her complete healing, it brought us closer together.
Waiting is not our enemy. It is an opportunity to develop a closer relationship
with our Maker, who has assured us He will answer us.
For
most of the time though, the process is more important that the answer
itself!
Will we eventually have our answer? We will discover that next month, when we
will continue to dig deeper into this fascinating topic. In the meantime, take
this waiting opportunity to get to know God. He is my best friend and He can be
yours as well!
Road closed ahead! Cool! I wonder where my Daddy will lead me next!
