Dressing Modestly

"I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with
braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds,
appropriate for women who profess to worship God." - 1 Timothy 2:9-10
Kim Alexis grew up in the small town of Lockport, New York. In 1978, while
enrolled in a local modeling school during her senior year, Kim was
"discovered" by John Casablancas, owner of the famous Elite modeling agency,
when someone from the school sent him her photo. By the 1980's, Kim was one of
the first American supermodels and she graced the cover of over 500 magazines
in the 1980s, including Vogue and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Then on
January 21, 1990, Alexis asked Jesus to take control of her life. Now she
counsels women to avoid some of her mistakes. She says the following about
dressing modestly: "Many women are playing with fire in the way they dress.
Dressing like a floozy tells the world, 'Look at me, want me, lust after me.
I'm easy and you can have me.' Displaying intimate parts of the body is a form
of advertising for sex. Dressing modestly tells the world, 'I respect myself
and I insist on being treated with respect.'" Alexis says, "It is possible to
be stylish and attractive without wearing something that is too short,
low-cut, or see-through."
Dressing modestly needs to be something both Christian women and men practice.
Today in prayer, ask the Lord to reveal any immodesty in your dress and seek
to dress modestly, with decency and propriety.
"Everywhere around us, we see people dressed in far too little clothing to
maintain their privacy, and are sometimes tempted to follow suit. For some,
dressing modestly means being out of fashion and peer pressure is a great
fear. For others, dressing modestly means being too hot during the day and so
they try to forge a compromise. In the end, none of the justifications we
create for exposing more and more skin will acquit us before God." - J.S.
Smith
God's Word: "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as
braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes." - 1 Peter 3:3
