A Maze 'n' Grace

Deuteronomy 1:32-33 - In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go. (NIV)

When I was very young, I remember my dad taking our family on a vacation to the seaside town of Prestwick, which is situated on the west coast of Scotland. The town is famous for its sand dunes and was the birthplace of the British Open Golf Championship (which was not St. Andrews!).

One day, we visited a community park that had a children's maze in its playground. The maze was constructed of four-foot-high hickory sticks wired together. When I saw it, I ran toward the maze and quickly reached its centre. When I tried to get out, I was trapped and ended up in tears. My Dad tried to shout instructions to me, but I was so confused that I couldn't understand his directions. Eventually he had to come in and get me. He didn't take me by the hand; he just said, "John, follow me." Within seconds, dad led me out to safety.

Since then, I've learned that trusting in God is much the same. Life is a maze at times and very confusing. But just like the Israelites of old, when the Lord leads and we are willing to follow, there is nothing to fear, and there is no need to be lost. Wherever we are today and whatever we are going through, we need to know that God is up ahead clearing the way and watching the path.

Prayer: Father God, guide us by Your grace, and lead us by Your love. No matter where we go or what we do today, always be ahead of us, so that we may faithfully follow in Your way. In Jesus' name. Amen.
