Stinky Days

Carol King sang “I feel the earth move under my feet” in her 1971 hit “I Feel the Earth Move,” but I actually experienced it.

Shortly after moving to an old home, my wife and I explored the overgrown backyard, contemplating how to restore its original beauty. A small area shook every time I walked across it. Clearing the weeds, we discovered a piece of metal which when lifted revealed a hole. Assuming it was an old well, we covered it with a flower bed.

Still concerned, I asked our landlord to investigate. As he watched, I jumped on the unstable spot. Imagine my surprise when the ground not only shook but disappeared beneath my feet. I quickly jumped to higher ground grabbing the rapidly vanishing flower pots. A rancid smell revealed what was beneath-our septic tank. I was glad God gave me quick reflexes.

Some days stink. Nothing goes right. The dog chews up the couch, the coffee filter collapses leaving grounds in your coffee, Junior wakes up with a fever, the boss writes you up for staying home, the car won’t crank, and your husband is out of town on business.

Cheer up. The Bible says: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)

All things aren’t good. Some reek with odors we’d rather avoid. But God takes the good and bad, mixes them together and bakes something wonderful. We just have to be patient until the surprise is done; trusting he’s in control of the process and that there’s love in every ingredient. Let God turn your stinky days into fragrant aromas.

Prayer: Lord, enable us to trust You for the best when life throws the worst.
